Some of the carvings are over a thousand years old! The 1600s were when European settlers started arriving through expeditions. The first permanent settlement was Fort Snelling and was established in 1825. By the 1860s, immigration became immense with Germans, Scandinavians, and many more. What is mostly known about Minnesota is that it has the world’s largest freshwater lake which brings in a lot of boats from around the world!minnesota 1

Climate

Minnesota has four seasons like the usual in the United States but what is unique and is important to know is that its winters are known to be very harsh and extreme. Janurary is its coldest month and is normally in the low 20s. During the summer, the evenings are the only time to wear layered clothing because it may rain. Sports in Minnesota include professional teams in all major sports, Olympic contenders and medalists, colligate teams in major and small-school conferences and associations, and active amateur teams and individual sports. The State of Minnesota all together has six professional sports teams with one in Major league baseball (MLB), the National Football league (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Soccer (MLS). Minnesota also is a part of one of the oldest major college conferences still running (the Big Ten).

The Minnesota Twins is Minnesota’s Major League Baseball team. The team was originally from Washington D.C. where they were known as the Washington Senators, but later moved to Minnesota and became the twins. The Twins first arrived in Minnesota in 1961, where they brought a nucleus of talented players such as Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Camilo Pascual, Jim kaat, Earl Battey, and Lenny Green. By 1962 the twins had won 91 games which was the most by the franchise since 1933. The twins won 102 games and the American League Pennant in 1965, but was also defeated in the world series that same year by the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games behind the world series most valuable player Sandy Koufax, with a 2-1 record, including winning the seventh game. The Twins would play their home games at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington from 1961-1981 and the Metro dome in Minneapolis from 1982–2009, they would then be moved to Target Field in 2010.

The Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings are a well-known NFL team in Minnesota. The Vikings were granted an NFL franchise at the league owners’ meetings in Miami on Jan. 28, 1960. The team began to play in 1961. The founding group consisted of Max Winter, E. William Boyer, H.P Skoglund, Ole Haugsrud and Bernard H. Ridder, Jr. In the late summer of 1960 a man named Bert Rose who was the former Los Angeles Rams Public Relations Director became the team’s first General Manager. Recommending the nickname “Vikings”  was one of Bert Roses’ first move with the team. The name was selected because it represented both an aggressive person with the will to win and the Nordic tradition in the northern Midwest. Norm Van Brocklin was the first selected head coach for the Vikings. On December 27, 1980, Running Back Tommy Mason of Tulane was taken with the 1st overall choice and the first-ever draft pick utilized by the Vikings.

The stadium takes over 66,000 seats.

Also that year Quarter Back Fran Tarkenton was selected in the third round and Defensive Back  Ed Sharockman in the fifth. Following the 1960 season , the Vikings were given the option to select 3 players from the roster of each team after each team was allowed to protect 30 of their 38 players. Although Dallas was exempt from this process the got players from Detroit and San Francisco. In the April of 1961 the Vikings were finally assigned to conference. They were assigned to the western conference where they would join Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Several months later the Vikings would finally have their game in franchise history. They would play the Dallas Cowboys in a preseason game in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on August 5, 1965. The Vikings were defeated by the Cowboys 38-13.

Minnesota TimberWolves

Minnesota also has a NBA team called the Timberwolves. They play in the western conference. The Timberwolves began play in 1989 as an expansion team alongside the Eastern Conference’s Orlando Magic. As a new team, the “T-Wolves” unsurprisingly struggled in their initial years in the league, winning no more than 29 games in any of their first seven seasons. In 1995 the Timberwolves’ vice president of basketball operations, former Boston Celtic star Kevin McHale, a Minnesota native, drafted teenage forward Kevin Garnett straight out of high school. Garnett soon led the team to the first playoff berth (1996–97) and winning season (1997–98) in franchise history. While Garnett turned the team’s fortunes around, he was unable to lead it past the first round of postseason play in any of Minnesota’s first seven playoff berths, through the 2002–03 season. Before the 2003–04 season the Timberwolves added veteran guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. That season the team won its first division title and its first playoff series, advancing to the Western Conference finals before ultimately being eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2004–05 the Timberwolves failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time in eight years. They traded Garnett in 2007 in an effort to spur the rebuilding of the franchise. McHale left the franchise soon thereafter, and new management built a team centred on All-Star forward Kevin Love that steadily improved and in 2013–14 had the 10th best scoring differential in the NBA but missed the playoffs with a 40–42 record in a historically strong Western Conference, which nevertheless was the team’s best finish in nine seasons.

Karl-Anthony Towns
A Star Player for the TimberWolves

Love, a pending free agent, was traded during the following off-season, and a rebuilding Timberwolves team finished the 2014–15 season with the worst record in the NBA (16–66). During the 2017–18 season the Timberwolves rebuilt around a promising young core featuring centre Karl-Anthony Towns that was complemented by veteran All-Star wing Jimmy Butler, and the team returned to the postseason after a 14-year playoff drought. However, Butler clashed with his coach and teammates and was traded away during the 2018–19 season, which ended with Minnesota finishing in last place in its division and missing the playoffs. The Minnesota Timberwolves are no longer the young team they’re often heralded as being. In truth, the roster consists of a number of players in different stages of their NBA careers, and a fair share of recent Wolves draft picks are now on different teams, with some of them flourishing in a different environment. The Wolves have undergone a number of personnel changes as well in this time, from coaches and assistants at the forefront to scouts and coordinators behind the scenes. One issue that seems to plague the team, at least from my perspective, is talent development. Whether or not this stems from bad drafting, poor player management or perhaps issues with player motivation I’m not quite sure. But to boil it down to one fairly comprehensive statistic, just one of the Wolves’ draft picks since the 2014 draft hold a positive Box Plus/Minus score over their career: Karl-Anthony Towns. For context, Box Plus/Minus is essentially an estimate of points a player contributes compared to league average per 100 possessions, factoring in both offense and defense

The Food of Minnesota

When you hear of the state Minnesota, unless you are from up north, nothing comes to mind other than its great lakes and how cold it is in which it could go down to whopping -50 degrees! Other than doing cold activities like skiing, Do you sometimes ever wonder what they even eat up north? The things you may hear about its food will make you want to take a food vacation! Throughout Minnesota there are all kinds of foods that are unique and full of diversity. It’s diversity, history and its vast productions allow its food to continue to be worth eating.

The history of Minnesota food

~Minnesota is known as the “bread and butter state” because of its flour mills and butter making plants. If you love buttery pastries and tons of different types of bread, Minnesota is the place to go! It is also one of the top leading dairy producers in the country as well as its production in hogs, corn, soybeans and wheat. Ever heard Pillsbury, General Mills and Land O’lakes? These are major companies that live in the heart of Minnesota. Along with it being the “bread and butter” state,  it is most noticeable for its grain, also known as the wild rice. Do not get it mistaken for actual rice. It is really a grass seed that has been a dominant source for Native Americans that lived in the northern regions. It’s native name is “manomio” which means “good berry.” Its other common names include “Indian rice, marsh oats, Canadian rice, squaw rice, water oats, and black bird oats (statesymbolsusa.org).” Wild rice is in most of Minnesota’s common foods like burgers, pancakes, soups, breakfasts and some desserts. It has a lot of nutritional value and is low in fats so it completely healthy to eat.

Minnesota’s favorite bites

There are many specific foods that many people go to Minnesota for because it is best made and handcrafted there. Minnesota is known for having swedish immigrants for more than 150 years so their food integrated into Minnesota and has become a part of its culture. Swedish meatballs and gravlax is one of their most famous dishes. Swedish meatballs are creamy and seasoned with allspice, juniper and pepper. It also comes with mashed potatoes and sweet pickles. Gravlax is flavored with dill and other types of spices but its delicacy and the way it is arranged on the plate makes it look ten times more edible. The restaurant to go to for these foods Fika, in Minneapolis.

The Gravlax

Because of Minnesota’s heavy production in wild rice, it is ingrained in its culture to be a top food choice. Wild rice soup is one top choices and it is on many menus all over the state. With it being creamy and brothy, it is loaded with veggies, wild rice, ham and almond slices. You can get it in either a grocery stores or cafes. At one of Minnesota’s most famous restaurants, The Duluth grill, it has the wild rice patty melt, the most item on the menu. It has “pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions, roasted red pepper vinaigrette and housemade wild rice patty on grilled multigrain wheat (foodnetwork.com).”

Wild Rice Patty Melt

What we would think is a casserole, Minnesota has its own name for it called the hot dish. You can get it with either beef or chicken but with it, it has veggies melted cheddar cheese, ground beef stirred in the canned cream of mushroom soup with tator tots at the top. It is a main dish mostly made at home but you can get it The Mason Jar in Eagen.

The Hot Dish

Famous for its polish sausage, Kramarczuk’s is the place to go. During World War 2, the 1940s the Kramarczuk’s immigrated from the Ukraine to to pursue the American dream. They founded the restaurant which is considered a landmark today after 60 years of growth. This polish sausage is commonly sold at ballpark stands and sells roughly 1500 links during the games.

The Polish Sausage

Because of it being it being the flour milling state, bakeries are quite common all around Minnesota. Rustica, a popular bakery sells the famous Artisan bread. It does have many other types of homemade breads to choose from including other types of pastries like cookies. Another popular pastry is the popovers, a scandinavian meal made award winning chef Paul Berlund. The place to find this amazing pastry is at The Bachelor Farmer.

Artisan Bread

Along with swedish and ukrainian roots, it also has Italian culture ingrained in it as well. In Minnesota, had thousands of italian miners and with it, came the Porketta of Porchetta, fennel and garlic seasoned pulled pork. It can be found at the Terzo Vino Bar and Porchetteria.

Porchetta/Porketta

Turkey burgers are common all over the United states but what makes it unique to Minnesota is that it has 450 turkey farmers and there approximately 46 million turkeys per year. The Birchwood cafe uses only locally sourced organic ingredients which includes the turkey burger. What is interesting is that this particular restaurant has seasonal menus and the turkey burger is on all of those menus. It even has a Thanksgiving menu! The seasonal menu is based off of what the farmers have available.

Turkey Burger

Within Minnesota, it has a vast Vietnamese and Hmong community. One of the most popular Vietnamese dishes is Pho, which can be found at the Ngon Vietnamese Bistro in the Twin Cities. This restaurant was founded by  Hai Truong who moved with his Vietnamese Chinese family moved to Minnesota in 1979 at five years old. He only uses local beef bones as broth which takes 36 hours to cook. He also has meals for vegetarians!

Pho

Of course it know that Minnesota is home of the great lakes, so it is expected to have fish as a part of its meals. Smoked fish at the Northern Waters Smokehaus is one of the most popular dishes. This restaurant gets its fish from lake superior. The smoked fish sandwich is salmon with cajun seasoning with many veggies.

Smoked Fish

The Juicy Lucy, a popular but heavily controversial burger takes first place when it comes to trying out Minnesota’s finest foods. The Duluth Grill’s rice patty melt comes second. The dispute that seeps from Juicy Lucy is who invented the burger with the cheese inside of the patty. People say that this invention stems from the 6Smith restaurant but because no one really knows, it is a controversial topic. This burger oozes with beef, elk, gouda, bacon jam, jalapenos all on a pretzel bun.

The Juicy Luicy

The food in Minnesota is flawless but it is sort of difficult to eat food without a good drink with it. Beer shines through Minnesota with over 105 breweries with the production of 630,000 gallons per year. The best place to get a good beer is at the Surly Brewing Company. It is not only popular in Minnesota but really big throughout the midwest. It’s restaurant is also considered one of the best in the country according to foodnetwork.com.

Because Minnesota is the bread and butter the state, one the top producers of the wild rice and dairy, it has some of the best foods in the country. From its pastries to its wild rice burgers, it has many options that would make you want to take a food vacation! It also has a lot of diversity from immigration that has landmarks and lots of historical value. Don’t want American burgers or sandwiches, it also has Italian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Swedish and many more options. Before you try these other unique and tasty foods, make sure to try its wild rice from its native lands! It could be eaten for breakfast lunch and dinner and it also is very nutritious! Minnesota has many beautiful great lakes with many food options to choose from!

Prince, Most Notable Person: Career

Prince had a very long and illustrious career, which spanned over 4 decades and saw
many twists, turns, and groundbreaking moments. His debut album, For You dropped in 1978, and he played all the major instruments on this album. But major success didn’t come until “I Wanna Be Your Lover” from his second album hit the top 20. His third album explored themes of sexuality, a subject he often revisited in later works. Much of his work also contained many references to spirituality, beauty, and wonder. Perhaps his most famous and enduring work, was his album, Purple Rain, which was the soundtrack to the film of the same name. Known for pushing the envelope with lyrics steeped in sexuality, the song “Darling Nikki” from the Purple Rain album caused then Senator Al Gore’s wife to push for albums to carry warning labels for explicit content. In 1992, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Brothers, worth $100 million dollars and was the most lucrative recording and music publishing contract of all time. He worked on numerous collaborations with many other big names at the time, including Madonna, Patti Labelle, and Chaka Kahn.
When Prince and the New Power Generation released Love Symbol Album, It was a less
than stellar earner and this caused a tension with Warner Brothers which caused Prince to feel that the company was being too controlling. In retaliation, he changed his name to a single symbol made by fusing female and male astrological symbols, which generally was not approved of by his fan base. He eventually was able to gain a release from his contract and released a triple album called Emancipation, which was wildly successful. Prince released several more albums and then, in 2007 he performed during the Super Bowl XLI halftime show, which was viewed by over 140 million people worldwide. The performance was considered iconic. It led to him being named by Billboard.com the greatest Super Bowl performer. Later that year, he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

On April 21st, 2016, Prince was discovered dead in an elevator in his Paisley Park Studios complex. His death went ahead of the impact points of his last show at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, on April fourteenth, and a crisis arrival of his private plan, with the FAA revealing an unresponsive man onboard. Prince was assisted to a Moline, Illinois medical hospital, where he emerged, and after two days offered fans a dance party at his home in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He presented his new purple Yamaha piano and purple guitar. His enthusiasts were excited by this unforeseen experience. In what ultimately turned into a tragically prophetic statement, Prince cautioned his fans and told his fans to hold up a couple of days before any of his fans waste any prayers. In exactly a couple of days, Prince was dead.At his death, much was made of the presence of a vault of unpublished recordings and songs. That vault was situated in his Paisley Park Studio, and drilled open by Bremer Trust, a wealth management company, given temporary control of Prince’s estate. It is estimated that there is such a great amount of music in the big vault, that another collection of the album could be released each year for the following 100 years. The estimation of Prince’s estate will probably change to untold measure throughout the next couple of years.Prince legacy have put out two lessons for us to learn and apply for our daily lives. His first lesson was to be true to ourselves, prince showed something or have done something in the music world that no one have came close to him he made sure that his music’s could never be boxed into one niche or one genre, so that he would never be defined as anything but himself. And his second legacy is having perfect practice makes perfection, He was not anything but just ego, but. rather, he was amazing at what he did. And that didn’t just come to him either. He worked extremely hard to be that tremendous, being intensely devoted to his work. In fact, on his first five albums Prince played nearly every instrument, most of which were self-taught instrument, and that’s what makes his legacy memorable.

Brief History Of Minnesota

The history of Minnesota was once point of many conflicts and dominance in its region, in its history the land was occupied by many nations from the Spanish, French and the English. Forts and military bases were built and settled there, and it was also considered territory under the united states. But Minnesota was fortunate to be a state and being part of the United States Union in 1858 and participating in the American Civil War. Minnesota didn’t only participated in the American civil war, just three years after of its state hood, Minnesota was involved one of the most deadly wars in its history is the Dakota war in 1862. It was a horrendous conflict that happened between the United States and the Dakotan’s. Minnesota did have strong development in the 1900s like the improvement of agricultural, new infrastructures and etc. In the late 1920s when the stock market crashed, Minnesota did have an impact, but Minnesota did improve there productivity in there businesses at that time. One of the most notable and historical places in Minnesota is Fort Snelling, because it was base where it defended and kept the British occupiers away and it was also once when Minnesotans sign up to join the United States armed forces during WWII and also a training camp for the soldiers until it stopped after WWII.

On May 11, 1858, Minnesota became the country’s 32nd state and admitted into the Union. Minnesota had the toughest journey in proclaiming itself a state, because, during that time Minnesota was under France, Spain, Great Britain, and the United States. Minnesota was once part of the United States, the land became part of 9 territories which are the Northwest, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota.

The Dakota conflict By 1862, the Dakota were packed into a little reservation along the Minnesota River. Times were had and Indian families hungry. At the point when the U.S. government broke its guarantees, a portion of the Dakota did battle against the white farmers and towns. Numerous Dakota did not participate, however, the battling kept going a month and a half and numerous individuals on the two sides were killed or fled Minnesota. A short time later the government drove the greater part Dakota away from Minnesota. The Anishinabe remained in northern Minnesota and were not engaged with the war.

The Dakota who stayed and the individuals who in the long run returned have shaped four communities in southern Minnesota. There are seven Anishinabe Indian reservations in northern Minnesota. Huge numbers of the Indian individuals and their families who moved to the urban communities after World War II have kept on living there. Wherever they live, Minnesota’s Indians are keeping up their social and cultural characters. A substantial number of settlers came to Minnesota starting during the 1830s to work in lumbering and cultivating. They were for the most part from the eastern United States, Canada, and northern Europe.

By 1900, the joined aggregate of Scandinavians from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark outnumbered those from any single province. Afterward, as urban communities and new enterprises developed, people came additionally from eastern and southern Europe. Finland, Yugoslavia, and Italy sent numerous workers to Minnesota mines and production lines. In 1900, about a portion of all Minnesotans were of German ancestry.

The Great Depression had many effects on the state of Minnesota, with cutbacks on the Iron Range and dry season in the Great Plains from 1931 through 1936. While the Depression had a few causes, one most applicable to Minnesota was that United States organizations or businesses during the 1920s had improved their productivity through institutionalizing production techniques or methods and disposing of waste. the owners of the businesses were receiving the rewards of this expansion in profitability, yet they were not imparting it to their workers on account of the shortcoming of composed work, nor were they offering it to the general public in the form of lowered prices. Rather, the godsend went to investors. The inevitable outcome was that purchasers could never again afford the goods that factories were producing.

At the point when the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Fort Snelling turned into the acceptance point for in excess of 300,000 people who joined the military. At its height in 1942, the Reception Center was equipped for preparing around 800 selects every day. Volunteers were sworn into the US military, got restorative examinations and inoculations, were arranged and allocated to a unit, and were issued basic hardware. Most selects remained at Fort Snelling for just a brief span before they were transferred to other military posts on start their basic training.

After 1944 the fort was the place of the Military Intelligence Service Language School, where Nisei (Japanese Americans born) Japanese Americans learned Japanese, Korean, and Chinese language and culture in anticipation of abroad administration as mediators, investigators, and insight workers. These soldiers assumed a significant job after the end of the war during the occupation of Japan.

At the point when World War II ended in 1945, in excess of 7,800 Minnesotans had lost their lives while serving in the military. Fort Snelling was formally decommissioned as an active armed forces post in 1946. The US military still keeps up a presence on the site, with certain buildings and properties being utilized by reservists from the US Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.

Fort Snelling is an important and significant point of Minnesota’s history. Its development started during the 1820s with the plan that it would be both a fort and an exchanging post, in spite of the fact that the latter never came to pass. The timing was affected by the recent conclusion of the War of 1812 and the U.S. government’s desire to stop any British impact in the Northwest Territory.

After opening under the name Fort St. Anthony the change to Fort Snelling was made later to recognize Josiah Snelling’s oversight of the development, the fort played numerous roles such as to supervise the area’s growing fur exchange, shield the British from descending south from Canada, remain peaceful limits among the Native American nations, and to oversee European immigration until more land could be procured from the Native Americans.

the fort was once decommissioned. The grounds and structures fell into a state of not being used. In any case, in 1960, the site was proclaimed a National Historic Landmark. This kept it safe from almost certain destruction from a planned highway. In 1965, the site was turned over to the Minnesota Historical Society, and subsidizing was appropriated to start reestablishing the site. Archeologists made various discoveries of items and structures, and the fort was reestablished with a close eye to authentic historical detail.

Today the site fills in as a bit of living history, open to guests amid the spring and summer months. There are visit occasions that spotlight different purposes of its course of events, just as active programs and kids’ camps. The reclamation brought the structures and grounds to a close of what it resembled during the 1820s, and give a great feeling of life of something so long ago.

In conclusion the history of Minnesota had a great and not so great historical point. Minnesota had occupiers occupied the land, there were struggles to be an official state to the United States, wars and conflict broke out in the land, but there were some great times in minnesota like improved agricultural, innovations and great infrastructures. Minnesota is considered an important state for development and economy to the country. Minnesota till this day holds many historical sites and the most important one Fort Snelling.
